Becoming a Confident Leader in Turbulent Times: Belief

You might be trying to do something new, working on solving a big problem, or just dealing—like all of us are—with a lot of uncertainties because of COVID-19.

We all have so many questions. And I want to share with you a truth that I’ve learned in my nearly 40 years in leadership as a pastor.

  2. Dan,
Thanks so much for stepping out of your confident zone with this great video. An example for the rest of us, who know that video technology will become the new normal. Thanks for teaching all of us about biblical leadership,.I look forward to watching you more.

    1. Hey Amy,

I appreciate your comments and… stepping out for sure! 🙂

The new normal will require all of us to stretch somewhere!

      Blessings and thank you.

Dan, great conversation! This felt like being back in your office with a one-on-one. Thanks for always challenging us to be God’s best!

Thanks so much for this reminder Dan! As an extrovert who has often described my preaching as ‘conversational’ due to the high level of interaction, I have been very uncertain about trying to pivot to videos (opting instead for zoom discussions). But the Lord has persisted in showing me all the places He could use video. The element that has been missing? Confidence. Thank you for naming it and giving us seasoned preachers space for a crisis in confidence in this time. I’m also wondering what tips your friend gave you that helped you move forward? Bless you!

    1. Jenn,

Yes, confidence is key to whatever we pursue that is new, out of our strike zone, or just flat difficult.

A few highlights that John shared with me are: 1. Don’t get hung up in trying to communicate too much content. (He knows I would try to do that. I’m a content guy.) 2. The connection and heart has to win first. (Content is super important, but can’t take over, and don’t overwhelm the listener. 3. Talk to a person, not to the camera, (even though you have to look at the camera) literally think about a real person, like a conversation. 4. Tell stories if at all possible. 4. Be real, honest and vulnerable. (Number one was the one that helped me start to believe I can do this, and the others are really helpful!)
